Plot synopsis
It is the first documentary film of Daniel Gordon’s trilogy about DPRK. Filmed in 2002, it won the Royal Television Society Award for best sports documentary.

“The Game of Their Lives” [“천리마 축구단” (“Chollima Chookgudan”)] is about the North Korean national football team who participated in the Football World Cup 1966. Coming in as 1000:1 outsider, the Football Team of DPRK won the match against the Italian team and propelled itself into the quarterfinal: it was the first time an Asian squad had advanced so far in a World Cup.

On their return to North Korea, according western media, “they were never heard from again“, amongst rumors that “they had been imprisoned due to womanizing and drinking“.

Hmmmm.. What did you say? Ridiculous Goebbels-like propaganda? Astonishing similarity with the rumors about DPRK’s football team in South Africa 2010 World Cup? (See here) We cannot disagree..
Daniel Gordon’s documentary comes up with the truth about these issues….

In contrast to the next two documentaries of the trilogy, “The Game of Their Lives” has certain inaccurate references. For example, it places “in the same bag” the foreign policy (International Solidarity) of the Soviet Union and the aggressiveness of the american imperialism. There is also an unfair intimation about limitations in the entry of westerners in the country, knowing that DPRK is in the bomb-sight of the “free (imperialistic) world”, constantly threatened and militarily encircled by USA & NATO. So it is absolutely reasonable and necessary for the DPRK authorities to check carefully people who would like to enter the country. Anyway, Gordon’s intentions are good.

Είναι το πρώτο ντοκυμαντέρ της τριλογίας του Daniel Gordon με θέμα την Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία της Κορέας και γυρίστηκε το 2002. Κέρδισε το βραβείο της «Royal Television Society» για το καλύτερο αθλητικό ντοκυμαντέρ.

Η ταινία «The Game of Their Lives» αναφέρεται στην εθνική ομάδα ποδοσφαίρου της ΛΔ της Κορέας που πήρε μέρος στο παγκόσμιο κύπελο ποδοσφαίρου του 1966 στην Αγγλία. Παρόλο που ήταν το απόλυτο αουτσάιντερ, στον αγώνα με του Ιταλούς η ομάδα της ΛΔ της Κορέας νίκησε καθαρά και στη συνέχεια κατάφερε να φτάσει μέχρι και την προημιτελική φάση του κυπέλου. Ήταν η μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία που είχε να επιδείξει ποτέ ασιατική ομάδα.

Οι λαϊκές οικογένειες της εργατούπολης του Middlesborough, όπου διέμειναν οι παίκτες και τεχνικοί της ομάδας ποδοσφαίρου της Βόρειας Κορέας, τους αγκάλιασαν, τους «υιοθέτησαν», εκτιμώντας την καλή τους συμπεριφορά, την ευγένεια και την εργατικότητα τους.

Όταν επέστρεψε η ομάδα στην Βόρεια Κορέα, τα δυτικά ΜΜΕ διέδιδαν την «είδηση» ότι «χάθηκαν τα ίχνη των παικτών της εθνικής ομάδας ποδοσφαίρου της ΛΔ της Κορέας», ότι «κανείς δεν ξέρει πλέον τίποτα γι’ αυτούς». Μάλιστα, ορισμένες «φήμες» έκαναν λόγο για φυλάκιση (!) των πρωταγωνιστών της Εθνικής Ομάδας της ΛΔ της Κορέας με την κατηγορία της «άσωτης ζωής» κατά την παραμονή τους στην Αγγλία…
Τι είπατε; Χονδροκομμένη προπαγάνδα; Εκπληκτική ομοιότητα με την ιμπεριαλιστική προπαγανδιστική εκστρατεία κατά της ΛΔ της Κορέας στο φετινό παγκόσμιο κύπελο; Θα συμφωνήσουμε μαζί σας.

Σ’ αντίθεση με τα δύο τελευταία ντοκυμαντέρ της τριλογίας, στο «The Game of Their Lives» υπάρχουν ορισμένες ανακριβείς αναφορές: Στο ίδιο τσουβάλι η Σοβιετική Ένωση και ο αμερικανικός ιμπεριαλισμός αναφορικά με την ιμπεριαλιστική επέμβαση στην κορεάτικη χερσόνησο (1950-1953), άδικοι υπαινιγμοί περί εμποδίων στην είσοδο δυτικών κινηματογραφιστών στη χώρα, όταν ο έλεγχος είναι απολύτως λογικός και αναγκαίος, καθότι η ΛΔ της Κορέας βρίσκεται μονίμως στο στόχαστρο των ΗΠΑ και του ΝΑΤΟ, συνεχώς απειλούμενη και στρατιωτικά περικυκλωμένη κλπ.
